WatchDog is a comprehensive security package for Web site monitoring, which features three components, including Web Site Vulnerability Scanning, Web Site Performance Monitoring, and a Certification Seal. Working together, these three elements monitor vulnerabilities, availability and performance, and build customer trust and confidence.

There has been a bit of buzz about the possiblity of accredited registrar, Google (oh and search engine giant too), buying Godaddy. Could this be possible? Looks Like Google might be lining up to Buy GoDaddy Inc the worlds largest domain registrar, a move that some speculate might help Google remove spam from search engine results. GoDaddy has applied for several patents in the past months. GoDaddy may be trying to attract Google as a buyer.

web hosting user reviews help

Featured web hosting user reviews Items

I've been with hostgator since around August of 2004. I signed up with a
reseller account to use as hosting for both myself and clients. My problems
began about a year ago with them, sometime in February or March of 2005 when one
of my sites was getting too much traffic. Now, I'm no fool. I understand that
shared hosting oversells and anyone who uses too many resources, even if still
within their quota, gets kicked off. What really shocked me, though, was no
warning. Not even emailing me after they had done it. Nothing, nada. I found out
by a member of the site that was suspended, someone I didn't even know, tracking
down my phone number and calling me.

I went to a dedicated server after that, but I kept my hostgator account for the
sites that were already hosted on it - about three client sites, as well as this
site right here.

Two days ago I come to post a blog and hmm, I get the suspended page. That's
weird. I check my email - no notices there. I log into their billing system -
nope, account not past due. What the heck? So I go to their online support chat
and ask them what's going on. I'm informed that I haven't paid my invoice. What
invoice? I have no invoice. I check my bank and I see that I in fact have not
paid them since January. But man, I could've swore I put it on automatic pay.
And hey, if there's no invoice, how can I pay anyway?! Isn't this a problem on
their end? They tell me I need to email sales.

Okay... so I email sales. 12 hours later, they email me back and inform me I
have an invoice, charging me all the way back to October. Uhhh? I KNOW I paid in
January, I have it in my bank statement. I check their billing system, and they
don't even have a backlog of that payment. Something really funky is going on
now. Their system is screwed up, but no matter who I talk to (and oh, I've
talked to everyone) nobody seems to know what's going on. Sales doesn't talk to
support, online support doesn't talk to phone support, so who the hell knows.

Strangely enough, while on the phone with a support guy who informed me I just
need to pay the invoice and then dispute it afterwards, I received an email from
a different support person that my account had been reactivated, and thank you
for the payment. Whaaat? Uh, whatever. At this point I'm just going to take what
I can get and run. Now I at least have backups of all my sites and am moving
them.

It's just astounding how bad a service this has been. I even posted on their
forums about it, in their "Customer Review" section, and it gets MOVED to
another section because I can't post a bad customer review simply because I
haven't paid. HELLO. I WANT TO PAY, JUST NOT MORE THAN I OWE. I NEED AN INVOICE.

Other problems I've had? Well, let's see. About a week ago my sites reverted
back a day and I could get no explanation on why. I had JUST looked at my access
logs the day before, happy about a new site that was already getting hits, and
the next day - logs are back to a day before. Weird. I contact online support
(bad idea, since it's always horrible support) and they have no idea. I guess I
imagined things?

UPDATE 4-20-07: Well, they finally just simply decided to take their bogus bonus
from my credit card that was filed with them, despite the fact that it's
incorrect, I didn't approve of the payment, or anything else. I've never seen
such bad service, support in my life. I can't even be bothered to dispute it
it's just so amazingly horrible.

UPDATE 10-18-07: I'm still with them, why? I don't know - so lazy when it comes
to my own websites. Anyway, so a couple days ago I notice my "main" reseller
account, the site is completely missing. Email is no longer working. I log into
Cpanel to see that it appears my whole site has disappeared. Cute!

News about girly space

Network Solutions is a provider of e-business solutions and domain name registration service, offering a full range of online services to small and medium enterprises, including web hosting, web design, e-commerce software, search engine marketing, SSL certificates, e-mail services and domain name registration. Network Solutions draws on over 29 years of experience to make it simple and affordable for customers to build and manage an online presence through a one-stop web Solutions provider.

Although not all the time, you will be requiring private ssl certificate. You can either use the free shared ssl provided, or use the third party merchant processing like paypal checkout, or 2CO payment processing. Where customer will be redirected to provider site to clear their payment.

For long term planning, you will need more than a shared hosting. For reliability and security reason, a vps hosting or a dedicated server is highly recommended. Although dedicated server might be very costly and most ecommerce sites are not requiring those huge processing power, in this case hostican vps hosting is most recommended.

Maximizing Your Mindshare (and Wallet Share) in the New World of SaaS

Thu, 01 Mar 2007 15:11:00 -0400

I really like SMBLive CEO Matt Howard's way of looking at software as a service. (Some argue that we should start calling it software enabled service.) Matt says running a business is all about maintaining "5 conversations": with oneself, co-workers, external partners (vendors/contractors/distributors), customers and the general public. So ideally, web apps should facilitate personal productivity,
collaboration, vendor management, CRM and sales/marketing.

Traditionally, hosting providers have focused on helping customers maintain a web presence - which only fulfills 20% of the functionalities Matt describes. So I thought it was pretty awesome when Barbara Branaman mentioned that Concentric is in the process of integrating its new collaboration service with its clustered hosting and email solutions. I said the unified offering should help Concentric increase mindshare. Barbara said also importantly, it will boost wallet share. The goal is to earn a larger slice of more customers' IT budgets.

Barbara will need to keep a close eye on Google, whose Apps Premier cover about half of the 5 conversations. Remember last December's headlines about Microsoft battling Gmail for corporate workers' attention? It seems Redmond faces an even tougher challenge with respect to productivity apps: Ars Technica reported yesterday that Google Docs and Spreadsheet account for a 92% share of unique visitors, and 95% of the amount of time spent. I'm not impressed with Google Pages, but Blogger is pretty popular. I'm sure sooner or later both will be rolled into Google Apps, along with Google Base.

Meanwhile, have you heard about eBay's new partnerships with ERP/CRM provider NetSuite (spotted via Mark Crofton's blog) and popular social network Bebo? And SalesForce is looking to build a "circle of success" around its CRM app; David Berlind says their odds are decent.

Earlier David Snead asked via a comment on an earlier post whether easy interoperability between different vendors' apps will obviate the need for hosting providers to customize services for any audience. Based on Rodney Loges' experience, I think the answer is no.

Rodney (who was instrumental in digitalNATION's $100 million sale to Verio as well as Rackspace's launch of its Intensive service) has transformed his company from a web development firm into a SaaS provider by assembling a suite of best-of-breed content management, web analytics, collaboration, etc, tools for associations and non-profits. Each hand-picked application meets specific requirements that his customers share. I think that's what it takes to win in SaaS/SES - of which hosting is just a small percent. In other words, the key is customer segmentation.

RoundCube on cPanel

Roundcube is a webmail interface which uses ajax extensively to give it a “desktop” like feel. According to a recent post on cPanel forums it is being internally tested for integrating it into cPanel. This would be a good alternative to horde which has a history of problems, and squirrelmail which looks ugly to non-geeks.

Fun Fact: Google's Revenue is $17,066 Per Server

Mon, 19 Mar 2007 19:52:00 -0400

I read about this on Bert Amijo's blog. 3Tera CEO Vlad Miloushev did the math:

1. Google's infrastructure consists of 500,000 to 1 million servers.

2. Google's Q4, 2006 revenue was $3.2 billion. On an annualized basis, that's $12.8 billion.

If you divide #2 by #1, you'd get $12,800 to $25,600 of revenue per server. If you take the average and divide the amount by 12, you'd end up with $1,422/month in sales for each server. Google spends about 10% of its revenue on operations, which equals $142 per server.

As a point of reference, let's consider HostGator's announcement that it will expand its presence at The Planet. HostGator currently leases 1,700 servers, which are home to 500,000 websites. That's 294 sites per server. If HostGator collected as little as $4.84 from each site owner, it'd generate more revenue per server than Google!

HostGator's cheapest service plan costs $6.95/month, but it allows customers paying $9.95 or more to host multiple sites. Which most - including HostGator's 10,000 resellers - do. So Brent doesn't have Larry and Sergey beat. Yet. But while I was doing the calculations above, I remembered a conversation with Lenkov from SiteKreator. Thanks to some kind of caching magic (which ISP-Planet discusses in this article), Lenkov's software can support up to 30,000 simple websites on a two CPU machine.

Let's say Brent springs for a quad core Clovertown from The Planet, hosts only 15,000 websites, and charges each site owner $1/month. This would put him ahead of Google in terms of both revenue/hosting expense ratio, and sales per server.

ISP-Planet says SiteKreator can be licensed for an "unpublished fee". I'll have to ask Lenkov about that...

hostgator Features Review

hostgator offers linux hosting only(even though they are expected to start
windows hosting in the near future). All their packages come with all the
features needed for a serious website. Baby and Swamp packages allow unlimited
domains(add on), which makes a lot of sense if you have multiple websites. They
use cPanel, which is the best control panel around. You get Fantastico script
installer which will install most of the popular open source scripts with few
clicks.

They support PHP4 & 5, SSH, Cron jobs, Python, Ruby On Rails etc. Also, all the
packages include enough POP3 accounts(20 for Hatchling and unlimited for
others).

hostgator Performance Review

hostgator host their sites on top-of-the-line Dual Xeon servers in their data
centers at Dallas. The data centers are well equipped and connects to 10
backbone providers. They offer 99.9% uptime Guarantee which is the industry
standard.

We started realtime testing of hostgator uptime on Feb 2008. The test is done on
a site hosted with hostgator, using a third party uptime monitor service. The
result after one week shows 99.78% uptime for our test site hosted with
hostgator.

While this is slightly less than the assure 99.9%, it is the BEST performance
out of top 4 hosts tested. There has never been a single case of site being down
for more than 3 minutes at a stretch. hostgator indeed lived up to their
reputation.

Dialpoint Stock Soars after Two Key Hosting - Telecom Acquisitions

Mon, 04 Feb 2008 19:47:00 -0400

I noticed that Dialpoint Communications Corp (OTCBB: DLPC) completed two acquisitions in January;

The first: Acquisition of Hostigation (Timothy Flavin), an asset transaction where the owners accepted 333,334 shares of Dialpoint stock. This stock has already increased 5 to 20 times (depending how you interpret the agreements) since the deal was inked.

The second: Acquisition of Brian's Computer Center, the press release stated “…the Company will issue unregistered shares of its common stock equal in the amount of 107,843 shares. The certificates representing the shares of common stock will bear restrictive legends.”

Dialpoint has a market cap of $38.6 million.

Am I impressed? Peeling back the onion...

  • Dialpoint has 13.3 million shares outstanding - thats a lot.
  • The Hostingation deal has a value of $50,000 at closing...a tiny deal
  • The Brian’s Computer deal value looks like it was $170,000...another tiny deal.
  • The stock increased from $0.51 on 1-17-08 to $2.90 today...thats a big gain.
  • Dialpoint President Billy Radford ownes 11.25 million shares...Can you say $32.6 million?
  • Over the last two weeks an average of 3,000 shares/day were traded...why bother.

If this was a deal put before one of my clients I would highly suggest we conduct extensive due-diligence prior to accepting a deal like this.

In these deals there is NO cash. The sellers probably cannot be liquid for at least 12 months, and with the current float it would be extreamly hard to sell the shares.

If you are selling your business I would tell you only to take stock as a small percentage from firms that are similiar to Dialpoint. The stock should be the upside - not the whole banana.

Other than the press releases and a couple of SEC docs I could find out almost nothing about Dialpoint. I will however admit they have been very successful in getting thousands of these two press releases pasted all over the Internet.

1 and 1 hosting has been around for a number of years, like most reputable
hosting companies they offer a large selection of hosting plans to fit most
webmasters / company needs. The domain 1and1.com was first registered in the
late summer of 1997, they have been doing business since I have been online
(about the same year).

While the prices are very competitive at 1 and 1 their customer service seams to
be lacking, many costumers have posted issues about poor customer service
(something that is very important when evaluating hosting companies). The
importance of good customer services becomes painfully clear when problems
arise. This is 1and1 biggest down fall and the reason for the sub par hosting
grade here on Cheap Hosting Reviews.Net

Services Offered:

As mentioned 1and1.com offers a wide selection of hosting plans and packages as
well as virtual private server, dedicated servers and click and go eCommerce
hosting options (they call these plans eshops). Where 1and1.com shines is their
uptime which steams from a robust set of data centers that have been built from
the ground up using advanced technology.
